In Awe at Arlington
Wow! What an afternoon. Finished the conference I was attending and knew I was close to Arlington National Cemetery. So with a full bottle of water I started walking. After just over a mile I got to the back gate. I was there all alone. 400,000 graves, 20+ burials a day. Being expanded to add 50,000 more sites.
When I walked out the front gate I realized I was only a mile or so from the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. Since reading “The Women,” this has been on my visit list. I was not alone on the National Mall but it was still moving. 10,000 American women were there. 67 died. 8 service women. Almost completely ignored until about 20 years ago.
I decided to experiment with the Metro (subway) to get back to the hotel instead of Uber. It was only another mile or so to a station. Once on the train it was a 15 minute ride back. Pretty cool.
What a great way to finish out my trip. It was hot, which I like. I walked 5ish miles. And I got to experience Arlington all alone. Awesome!
