I Ride For: Mike

It is Monday afternoon. It has been a great day. For some reason, I’m in a kick ass and take names mood and mode. This is probably a weird statement due to the kind and compassionate organization I’m about to mention in this post. But hey, Jesus kicked ass and took names in the temple.

I’ve never met Mike. But apparently he’s been kicking ass and taking names as well. Going through prostate cancer, his goal last winter was to be able to play golf and tennis. Working through the Evergreen Commons program in Holland, Michigan, he’s not made those goals, but he is able to play pickleball.

I’ve never played pickleball, but what I have watched and what I’ve been told is that the serious pickleball players are ruthless. I’m sure Mike is a nice guy, but my guess is when it comes to cancer recovery and pickleball, he may be a little ruthless, too.

I think the word ruthless gets a bad rap. We usually think about it in terms of mean people. But in order to be successful, I think we all need a touch of ruthlessness. We need to have ruthless boundaries, ruthless discipline, ruthless, desire, ruthless support and a ruthless belief that it can be done. Whatever success looks like.

Mike, congratulations on the work that you’ve done to get to the point where you can play pickleball. I hope you’re having a great time and crushing your opponents and then having a beer with them. Ha! I will almost for sure never play pickleball, tennis or golf (while stable and strong I still only have about 60% of my original T4 so no twisting for me.). But I can guarantee you that at a minimum one out of three rides, I ride ruthlessly. Three of those rides in the last 10 days were for you.

SHINE!
The Road Rider

PS I don’t mean to imply that Mike and I are like Jesus. Just saying that there are times in all of our lives to kick ass and take names.
